This International Women’s Day (Wednesday 8 March) we’re celebrating Elizabeth Raffald. An entrepreneur, cook & woman ahead of her time, she’s a much admired part of the history of Arley. Cook and author of the widely successful book ‘The Experienced English Housekeeper’.

The Victoria & Albert Museum in London held a talk on Elizabeth Raffald in October 2016:

Innovator Elizabeth Raffald is a huge character in Arley history and originated recipes for wedding cake and Eccles cake – come to The Gardener’s Kitchen to try bakes inspired by her!

We have invited local school to be part of our decorating a Christmas Tree Competion as part of the Arley Christmas Floral Extravaganza.

They have been asked to decorate a tree in our Cruck Barn, which we will provide, so that it can be on display to our visitors during our Christmas week of opening of Saturday 3rd December through to Thursday 8th December.

The trees will be judged on Saturday 3rd December at 12noon by Stockley Farm Park who we are proud to say are sponsoring the competition again this year. The lucky winning school will be able to visit the farm with their whole class (30 children and 5 adults) for a FREE tailor-made educational visit during 2016! (T’s and C’s apply).

This year we have 13 schools taking part, which is fantastic!

We are currently working on new paths in The Grove to make your walks that little bit easier in future.

The paths will be firmer, but when the grass grows you will not be able to see the difference. For now though, we have to ‘keep off the grass’ while it grows.

The Grove is an informal garden in a woodland setting. It contains spring bulbs, a very large collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and a wide range of other flowering shrubs and exotic trees, including varieties of oak, birch, magnolia, prunus, sorbus, malus, kalmia and hydrangea. Particularly colourful in spring, The Grove provides a most attractive walk throughout the season and visitors frequently comment on its peacful atmosphere.

The Grove also showcases the hugely successful Sculpture Exhibition which continues to attract a wealth of talented artists who take inspiration for their work from this beautiful woodland garden.

BBC Antiques Roadshow was filmed at Arley in the summer and the 1st of 2 episodes was shown last Sunday, 25th September with an amazing find! The second episode will be shown on Sunday 2nd October.

What ever the weather this weekend visit Galloway Antiques Fair at Arley from Friday 2nd September – Sunday 4th September 10.30am – 5pm.

Galloway Antiques Fairs have been organising quality antiques and fine art fairs for 21 years.
They have many nationally known dealers exhibiting a wide range of items to include town and country furniture, silver, jewellery, paintings, sculpture, glass, porcelain, antiquarian books and prints, angling antiques, oriental rugs, mirrors, clocks, lighting and many decorative items for your home.

The fairs have a dateline restriction of 1970 with the exception of fine art and sculpture where no dateline applies. All items are vetted for quality and ‘reproductions’ are strictly forbidden.
