The Herbaceous Border at Arley Hall

Executive Vice President of the RHS Jim Gardiner is leading the search for the RHS’ new
fifth Garden. Previously Director of Horticulture and Curator of the RHS’ flagship garden,
RHS Garden Wisley, and recently winner of the International Garden Tourism Award, Jim
has worked in horticulture for nearly 50 years, with 25 years spent at the RHS.

Having visited and enjoyed hundreds of gardens in the UK and around the world, here Jim
shares his top gardens to visit in 2015, and best Woodland and Formal Gardens. The top ten
gardens have been personally selected by Jim for the tremendous breadth of plants on show
and how they are displayed.

Tatton MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne visited Arley Hall in Cheshire to meet the cast and crew of Disney and Lime Pictures’ latest hit production, Evermoor.

Evermoor is a UK-based live action series produced and filmed by Lime Pictures in the North West of England. Already seen by 1.5 million viewers in the UK, Evermoor will go on to premiere on Disney Channel in more than 160 countries worldwide from this autumn.

STANDING 26-feet high the Ilex Avenue is one of the most vivid memories visitors take away from Arley Hall in Cheshire.

The cylindrical holm oaks are so shaped only because of the impact of the First World War, but now form an iconic part of the award-winning gardens.

“In an early painting the Ilex can be seen as pyramidal trees of only moderate size, but during the First World War they were left unclipped for several years,” said gardener Doug Rustage, 50.
